Congratulations! You are engaged, the ring is on, and your phone has not stopped buzzing.
And somewhere between the happy tears and the celebration dinner, a little wave of panic might be creeping in. Where do you even start? What does a wedding actually cost? How do you know which vendors to trust?
If that sounds familiar, you are in very good company. Nearly every couple we work with feels this way right after getting engaged. Here is what to do first, before you book a single vendor.
Before the spreadsheets and the vendor calls, give yourselves a moment. Call your grandparents, go out for a special dinner, and let the excitement sink in.
This season only happens once, and the planning will still be there next week. Starting from a place of joy, rather than pressure, makes every decision that follows a little easier.
Sit down together and talk about the wedding you are picturing. Not the details yet, just the feeling. A few questions to get you started:
A rough guest count is one of the most helpful numbers you can have early on. It shapes your venue options, your budget, and almost every decision after that.
You do not need a perfect number yet, just a comfortable range. Decide together what you are able to spend, and whether family members plan to contribute.
Many couples take a first pass at a budget on their own, or ask a parent to help map it out. It is a lovely instinct, and it often gets overwhelming fast. It is hard to know what is realistic for each category when you have never planned a wedding before, and the numbers you find online rarely match what things cost where you live.
This is one of the first things a planner can help with. We walk you through what a realistic budget looks like across every category, so you can make decisions with confidence instead of guesswork.
You do not need an exact date yet, but knowing the season helps enormously. Are you dreaming of a summer garden party, crisp autumn colours, or a cozy winter celebration?
Think about the dates that matter to your family, too: religious holidays, important anniversaries, or times when loved ones travelling from far away can make it. A flexible range of a few months gives you far more options when it comes time to book your venue.
A planner knows which vendors are truly trustworthy and which ones simply have great marketing. That insight can save you from locking in a contract you later regret.
Most couples interview two or three planners, and we think that is smart. As you meet with each one, notice how you feel after the call. Do they listen to your vision, or push their own? Do they give you a clear recommendation, or an endless list of options? Do you feel calmer, or more overwhelmed?
By this point, the question is not really whether you need a planner. It is which planner you trust. Go with the one who makes you feel understood.
The fact that you are reading this means you are already off to a thoughtful start. Take it one step at a time, lean on each other, and remember that the goal is not a perfect plan. It is a day where you feel fully present with the people you love.
If you would like a hand with the next step, we would love to hear your story and start dreaming up your day together. Congratulations again!
Let’s bring your wedding dreams to life!
Warmly, Jenna
